story is in many respects a sad and cautionary
tale, but it is also a story of courage in the face of adversity, and survival against the odds.
Stevie Wright, the lead singer of legendary Australian band The Easybeats, has died at age 68.

Rumer - P.F. Sloan [Live At Rivoli Ballroom]
P.F. Sloan
Sloan co-wrote a series of hit songs with Steve Barri during the 1960's and early 1970's most notably Barry McGuire's "Eve of Destruction", "Unless You Care" by Terry Black and "Secret Agent Man" by Johnny Rivers. Sloan & Barri on several songs which became hits for The Grass Roots - "Where Were When I Needed You", "Let's Live For Today" and "Things I Should Have Said." In addition to songwriting, Sloan was also respected session player and was associated with The Wrecking Crew.
Given the events which have taken place in Paris, "Eve of Destruction" takes on a new meaning 50 years after it was written.

Got killed by a blow, lay slain by a cane
Late on the night of February 9, 1963, Carroll was working the
white-tie Spinster’s Ball when William Devereux “Billy” Zantzinger
arrived to the soiree already drunken and boisterous. The 24-year-old
Zantzinger was a scion of a wealthy Charles County tobacco-farming
family.
By all accounts, Zantzinger assaulted at least three workers at the
Emerson Hotel and the Eager House restaurant with a toy cane. At the
Spinster’s Ball, Zantzinger struck a 30-year-old waitress with the cane
and called her “nigger,” causing her to flee in tears.
Moments later, angry that Carroll did not serve his bourbon quickly
enough, Zantzinger struck her across the shoulder and head with his
cane, calling her “nigger” and “black son of a bitch.” Zantzinger then
attacked his then-wife, Jane, knocking her to the ground.

Led Zeppelin - Achilles Last Stand (Live Knebworth 1979)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?t=66&v=YWOuzYvksRw
You can see the renewed sense in them. Almost a desperation to prove
they were still LED ZEPPELIN, BEST ROCK BAND EVER. And all the force
they could muster seemed to fully come together on this song. It has the
feel of a military campaign, and they are rolling along like a
steamroller.

Yes - Close To The Edge Live 1975 (HD) - A Celebration 2DVD set
He had an approach that contrasted sharply with the somewhat monotonic,
immobile bass parts of today. His lines were important; counter-melodic
structural components that you were as likely to go away humming as the
top line melody; little stand-alone works of art in themselves.
Whenever I think of him, which is not infrequently, I think of the
over-driven fuzz of the sinewy staccato hits in Close to the Edge (6’04”
and on) or a couple of minutes later where he sounds like a tuba
(8’.00”). While he may have taken a while to arrive at the finished
article, it was always worth waiting for. And then he would sing a
different part on top.
An individualist in an age when it was
possible to establish individuality, Chris fearlessly staked out a whole
protectorate of bass playing in which he was lord and master. I suspect
he knew not only that he gave millions of people pleasure with his
music, but also that he was fortunate to be able to do so. I offer
sincere condolences to his family.

Tim Drummond remembers meeting Dylan in 74.
During CSNY’s groundbreaking 1974 tour, Bob Dylan stopped by the band’s
hotel and sat down with Stephen Stills and bassist Tim Drummond.
“He played us all the songs from Blood on the Tracks
on acoustic guitar. We were on twin beds, across from each other. Oh
God, I can’t tell you how great it was. At one point Stephen said
something to him about the songs not being good. I was so Goddamn
embarrassed. He was probably coked out. Dylan, being the arrogant man
that he was said, ‘Well, Stephen, play me one of your songs.’ That was
the end of it. Stephen couldn’t even find one string from another at
that point.”
